MS International Leader Training Seminar 2004
7th April - 12th April

Do you get a kick out of meeting and being with people, challenging ordinary life, and discovering new perspectives?

Then join the leader training seminar!
Every year Mellemfolkeligt Samvirke organizes an international leader training seminar aimed at preparing new leaders for work camps of the following summer.

The seminar is organized by a group of volunteers experienced in leading work camps in Denmark. They plan the seminar based on the skills and experiences you need to become a work camp leader, and the result is a 5-day seminar in which many aspects of leading a work camp will be discussed, based on experiences from past seminars and work camps.

However, the seminar is not a formal course where participation will guarantee you professional qualifications. Think of it more as a possibility to learn something about yourself in relation to other people and an opportunity to realize your potential as a leader.

The experience you obtain by participating in the MS Leader Training Seminar can also be used in other aspects of life, e.g. education, job or organizational work.

Experience 5 hectic and intensive days

The purpose of the MS International Leader Training seminar is to inspire and prepare you for the challenges that await you as the leader of an international work camp. Both people with and without previous work camp experience can participate in the seminar. The learning process of the seminar is based on the principle "learning by doing" which requires your active involvement in planning and carrying out the program. This means that no final solutions will be given to you, but you will have the opportunity to work on different aspects of being a leader, and thereby obtain the tools you need to be the leader of a work camp. The topics included in the seminar are: group development, leader roles, intercultural cooperation, conflict management, motivation and lots more. At the seminar you will also receive practical information about planning a work camp, spare time activities, first aid, etc.

The language spoken at the seminar is English as almost one third of the participants are from abroad.

Becoming a work camp leader

Each of the international work camps in Denmark has two camp leaders. Usually both camp leaders are Danish, but international participants who take part in the seminar can become leaders if they find a Danish co-leader at the seminar. International participants also have the possibility of becoming leaders in their own country.

While participating in the MS Leader Training Seminar you will be introduced to the work camps that will take place during the summer of 2004. You will receive information on dates, location, work project, number of volunteers, etc. During the seminar you will have the possibility to find a future co-leader, if you do not already know someone.

Once you have chosen a work camp you will receive a letter from Mellemfolkeligt Samvirke that includes detailed information about the work camp and the planning done so far. From here on you and your co-leader will take over the project, meet the host and get an introduction to the location of the work camp. During the work camp your job is to coordinate the work with the host, help the participants organize spare time activities, do the accounts, and help make the work camp an unforgettable experience for everyone. Throughout your preparations, and during the work camp, you will be supported by MS. You will not be paid for your efforts, but if you become a leader of a work camp, all transport costs to and form the work camp, participation at the seminar, and room and board during the work camp will be covered. (For international leaders only travel costs in Denmark are covered)

At the end of the work camp season there will be an evaluation meeting, where all the leaders meet and discuss their experiences - and celebrate the end of the season.

Facts on workcamps

Every year Mellemfolkeligt Samvirke organizes 15-20 international work camps all over Denmark. The work camps take place from June to October and usually last 2 - 4 weeks, each with anything from 8 to 20 international volunteers.

The volunteers at the work camps come from Eastern-, Central and Western Europe, USA, Canada, Japan, South Korea, Mexico, and some are from 3rd world countries. Work camps in Denmark are organized in cooperation with project hosts such as local municipalities, regional authorities, youth clubs, folk high schools, institutions and organizations.

Working projects on work camps are of great variety: activities for children, environmental work, construction and renovation, work in historical villages and workshops, establishing playgrounds, and work with educational purposes are only a few examples.

A typical working day at a work camp lasts 5-6 hours. This gives lots of possibilities for activities with the local population, sightseeing, learning about each other's cultures, fun and parties.
