  • Project: From the early 1980s, people moved to city getting a job followed by Korean industrialization. While parents were working outside till the late of the night, children had not fully cared by their parents from security, nutrition and education. Unfortunately most of them are disadvantaged financially. Due to the reason, religious institution started the services for children those who needed good hands. This is beginning of the Local Children Center. In 2004, those places were recognized as an official place as a shelter of the children who are in needs, under the law. And it has been partly supported by government. However, financial support from the government is still quite limited. The Local Children Center operates by local church. The center has many children who are growing up in families with one parent, or grandparents. The center provides children not only a shelter so that children could protect them until their parents come but also educational and cultural opportunities so that children can open up a door to a new experience. Most of them have fewer opportunities meeting foreigners, so with the help of international volunteers, the local children can experience global awareness while volunteers can feel the warmth and kindness of this rural Korean community.

Jeongeup, connected to Mt. Naejang National Park and Mt. Ibam, is an especially stunning city to tour during the spring and autumn seasons. But as the government usually develops infrastructure depending on the population of the region, many people in this area are isolated from these benefits. Due to the reason, the local youth do not have many opportunities to be involved with international people. In this respect, this project will play an important role in bringing a taste of international culture to the local children and people.

    * Those above are a main job of volunteers to do at an LCC.

Volunteers will plan and organize their own English conversation class for different age of children and youth. Volunteers will also help other local children centers in the village. Volunteers work from Monday to Friday (from 2 to 9 pm, mostly).

    Teaching Information:
    - Age & Number of students: 8 to 16 years old & 10 to30 children at an LCC
    - Number of Teachers: 1 to 3 teachers

Extra activities: Mountain hiking, local festivals, exploring the nearby historical site.

Donghae city is located in the southeastern part of Gangwondo. The area is rich in beautiful mountains and coast. In summer time, many tourists crowed into the beach in Donghae. The area where children center is located is one of the poorest area in Donghae city, and most of children at center are socially & economically disadvantaged. Below are some of the comments extracted from the final reports of the volunteers who had participated in IWO MTV projects in 2007. They will give you some ideas about what will IWO MTV projects be like this year.

    Mark Kolesik from Austria
    (2011, Sanan MTV Volunteer)

"It was nice to learn a different way of life on a chicken farm. And as a team, we also learned a lot about Korean culture. Work here was hard sometimes, but also really rewarding. We learn a lot for our life, such as teamwork, intercultural understanding and about environment. Feelings and thoughts are always shared between the residents of Sanan Village. "

    Claire DUBOUIL from France
    (2011, Jangheung MTV Volunteer)

"We could find the project really impact on the confidence of the children in the center! And also, they feel even more at ease with foreign people after having spent 3 months with us. We are happy of what we did with them, and we hope to have brought them some curiosity about the world... "

    Laetitia Godenir from Belgium
    (2010 Busan MTV Volunteer)

"I really like being in Korea. People are really nice, food is great. I enjoyed this culture and the mix between tradition and modernity. And sometimes it was hard to confront my European point of view and the traditional Korean point of view. But I think it's also why cultural differences are interesting. Sometimes I would have like to speak more Korean . "

    Elle McCALL from England
    (2010 Horseman MTV Volunteer)

I have learnt SO much about Korean culture, attitudes and way of life. I really feel like I experienced a lot of things in these 3 months. I think this school is a very unique and interesting place, while seeing other areas of Korea was also great! I've learnt that I can't always rely on students to be inspired (as I have found possible before). I have been able to compare the equestrian world here with what I know back home. "

    Makan DIEBATE from France
    (2009 Memispace MTV Volunteer)

"I've became more confident about working with people and performing in front of bigger audiences. I think through being here I have become a more responsible person, more open and surely more createive. I was able to meet so many kind and interesting people, getting a chance to learn Korean language (and many more things) and having really good time through all three months ! "

Anna Kopecka from the Czech Republic
    (2008 Horseman MTV Volunteer)

"This project is really a good choice! I have enjoyed it so much and I am amazed by the Korean people. You do not have to worry because if the things here do not go as planned it will still turn out well and the people around you will always help you. I will keep these people in my mind, they are really worth knowing! "

    Eko Wahyudi from INDONESIA
    (2007 Sandol School MTV Volunteer)

"Thanks to IWO that gave this chance to me. It was good experience living in Korea. I learnt many things from this project such as culture, social life and language. I have better understanding about diverse culture. This project opened my eyes and broadened my knowledge about global understanding. "

    ǥ

    Susanne Mondry from GERMANY
    ( 2006 Silsang-sa Little School MTV Volunteer)

"I am sure that this project has a big influence on my life. Being together with teachers and students who are not content with the general Korean educative system, who are willing to change it and working very hard to achieve their goal was wonderful. Also the beauty of countryside lifestyle and of course the beauty of Jirisan and the temple will always remain to me. A big hug to all the students who were so warm and friendly with us and thanks to the teachers and especially to Hansaem who took care of us so well."
