Project: Korea Horseman High School takes pride in being known as the first choice among students who seek to begin their careers as horse trainers and managers. It is a public high school designed for in-depth instruction and exercises about managing and training racing horses. The students in this school build their horsemanship skills and eventually seek to be employed in horse managing fields.
The school was originally founded as a livestock farming school. However, as the appreciation for farming and livestock has steadily decreased among young people, the school transformed its curriculum to focus on training young horseman. In the past few years, the school has earned recognition for its horse training curriculum but still lacks in its international programs and interactions. With the help of LOVE volunteers, Korea’s Horseman High School can take a great leap towards adapting an international curriculum.

Work: Since the school is located in an area where it has limitation in meeting various international people, the purpose of this program is to foster the idea of global citizenship within the students through informal English or Japanese conversation classes and additional learning activities focused on world issues and cultural difference awareness, tolerance, and acceptance.
There are about 15-20 students in one class, and having skills such as dancing, singing, acting, and teaching languages (English or Japanese) will be very helpful. Additionally, volunteers will have the benefit of experiencing Korean culture, horsemanship, as well as other school activities or class field trips.

    Other Activity :
The students and teachers will be more than happy to give free horsemanship lessons. Visiting famous places in the local area is another great way to spend your free days.

  • Project: Uiryeong is a small town famous for its beautiful scenery and delicious traditional Korean rice cakes called “Bangae-deok”. Since the government usually develops infrastructure depending on the population of the region, many people in this area are isolated from those benefits. The host organization is a local church which runs a Local Children Center. The center provides educational and cultural opportunities to local children and youth. The center has many children who are growing up in families with one parent, or grandparents. Most of them have fewer opportunities meeting foreigners, so with the help of international volunteers, the local children of Uiryeong can experience global awareness while volunteers can feel the warmth and kindness of this rural Korean community.

Work: Teaming up with a LOVE Korean volunteer, international volunteers will organize and manage cultural and educational afterschool programs such as foreign language classes (mainly English) for different ages of children. The children who use the center are mainly elementary school students-with few middle school students—and normally stay at the center from 2PM and until around 9PM.
Any activities and ideas are welcomed by the host organization as long as they provide the local children with opportunities of cultural exchange. The local children are very open to new programs and are very interested in learning about different countries.

Below are some of the comments extracted from the final reports of the volunteers who had participated in IWO MTV projects in 2007. They will give you some ideas about what will IWO MTV projects be like this year.

    Mark Kolesik from Austria
    (2011, Sanan MTV Volunteer)

"It was nice to learn a different way of life on a chicken farm. And as a team, we also learned a lot about Korean culture. Work here was hard sometimes, but also really rewarding. We learn a lot for our life, such as teamwork, intercultural understanding and about environment. Feelings and thoughts are always shared between the residents of Sanan Village. "

    Claire DUBOUIL from France
    (2011, Jangheung MTV Volunteer)

"We could find the project really impact on the confidence of the children in the center! And also, they feel even more at ease with foreign people after having spent 3 months with us. We are happy of what we did with them, and we hope to have brought them some curiosity about the world... "

    Laetitia Godenir from Belgium
    (2010 Busan MTV Volunteer)

"I really like being in Korea. People are really nice, food is great. I enjoyed this culture and the mix between tradition and modernity. And sometimes it was hard to confront my European point of view and the traditional Korean point of view. But I think it's also why cultural differences are interesting. Sometimes I would have like to speak more Korean . "

    Elle McCALL from England
    (2010 Horseman MTV Volunteer)

I have learnt SO much about Korean culture, attitudes and way of life. I really feel like I experienced a lot of things in these 3 months. I think this school is a very unique and interesting place, while seeing other areas of Korea was also great! I've learnt that I can't always rely on students to be inspired (as I have found possible before). I have been able to compare the equestrian world here with what I know back home. "

    Makan DIEBATE from France
    (2009 Memispace MTV Volunteer)

"I've became more confident about working with people and performing in front of bigger audiences. I think through being here I have become a more responsible person, more open and surely more createive. I was able to meet so many kind and interesting people, getting a chance to learn Korean language (and many more things) and having really good time through all three months ! "

Anna Kopecka from the Czech Republic
    (2008 Horseman MTV Volunteer)

"This project is really a good choice! I have enjoyed it so much and I am amazed by the Korean people. You do not have to worry because if the things here do not go as planned it will still turn out well and the people around you will always help you. I will keep these people in my mind, they are really worth knowing! "

    Eko Wahyudi from INDONESIA
    (2007 Sandol School MTV Volunteer)

"Thanks to IWO that gave this chance to me. It was good experience living in Korea. I learnt many things from this project such as culture, social life and language. I have better understanding about diverse culture. This project opened my eyes and broadened my knowledge about global understanding. "

    «•ŃŲľ≥łŪ

    Susanne Mondry from GERMANY
    ( 2006 Silsang-sa Little School MTV Volunteer)

"I am sure that this project has a big influence on my life. Being together with teachers and students who are not content with the general Korean educative system, who are willing to change it and working very hard to achieve their goal was wonderful. Also the beauty of countryside lifestyle and of course the beauty of Jirisan and the temple will always remain to me. A big hug to all the students who were so warm and friendly with us and thanks to the teachers and especially to Hansaem who took care of us so well."
